🌼September Musings and Offerings🌼

September....already!

Once September begins, I know I always have to look out for spider webs on my early morning walks. They are dew-filled and beautiful, reflecting the sunlight. They also offer an invitation to pay attention. Otherwise, I walk into them face first or brush through and destroy them.

They are a representation of the web of life of which we are all a part and remind me of its beauty, strength and fragility.

Sometimes, especially in these strange times, it may seem impossible that our small acts of care or kindness matter-even if just saving a spider web.

But indigenous wisdom reminds us that these acts are the energy that we add to the world and they affect the whole web-for good or not. There is so much unconsciousness and unkindness.

You may wish to ask yourself some questions:

What are you adding to the web?

What energy signature are you leaving in your wake?

Are you being conscious about the imprint you are making?

Or are you unconsciously absorbing and reflecting what is all around you without question?

I believe it is our responsibility to be conscious, considerate and thoughtful as we move through these fragile times, especially knowing that our thoughts, words and deeds affect us all.

Yes, it takes time and hard work.

It is, though, an infinitely worthy and necessary practice.

And very hard to do when fearful and frazzled and spent.

(Y'all know I'm gonna say yoga nidra is essential here😍😴)

But the crises and challenges of these days also provide us with infinite possibilities and opportunities.

It all depends on how you choose to see.

I invite you to use this time of seasonal transition to see the opportunities.

To envision the life you wish to live and start living as if it is already so.

Don't wait for later.

Start living NOW

Be the best you can be.

Be who you came here in this lifetime to be.

Live into your dreams NOW.

This is NOT dependent on external circumstances.

Be YOU. Be the kindest.

Be the most peaceful.

Be the uniter.

Be the most understanding.

Be the most unique and real and true.

Let these transformative times break your heart open.

Come to life.

I'm bringing back the Sunday afternoon Donation Based Yoga Nidra for now and if there is interest I will add another evening session each month in the fall...and you can still join us monthly at Razz Yoga.

I know I may sound like a broken record, but now, more than ever, we all need deep and restorative rest to find the light in the darkness. To have the strength and courage to choose love.

Give yourself the gift of rest so that you can be the warrior that you are and let your light shine for all of us.

If like so many of us, you are struggling to find your way in these challenging times, I would be honored to help.

One of the most important things for healing is to feel empowered. Knowing that you can befriend yourself and create the container for deep healing is no small feat. With a unique combination of mindfulness, energy work and life experience, I can help you navigate .... not to the old self, but to the true self waiting to come into being.

In the Buddhist tradition, the Sangha is one of the 3 jewels: The Buddha, The Dharma (the teachings) and the Sangha (the community).

More than ever, in the divisiveness of these days, we need each other. I would love to be there for you.

Sangha

Teach me what I cannot learn alone.

Let us share what we know, and what we cannot fathom.

Speak to me of mysteries, and let us never lie

to one another.

May our fierce and tender longing

fuel the fire in our souls.

When we stand side by side, let us dare to focus our desire on the truth.

May we be reminders, each for the other, that the path of transformation passes through the flames.

To take one step is courageous; to stay on the path day after day, choosing the unknown, and facing yet another fear, that is nothing

short of grace.

“To the heart in you, don’t be afraid to feel.

To the sun in you, don’t be afraid to shine.

To the love in you, don’t be afraid to heal.

To the silence in you, don’t be afraid to break.”

~Najwa Zebian

As the darkness of the changing season begins to slowly encroach, remember to keep a candle burning in your heart.

Get deep rest and take gentle care of yourself so that you have energy for the diligent work needed to shift the negativity bias which is all pervasive these days.

You always get to choose how to see.

Don't be afraid to look.

Choose to come to your senses and feel your world, your heart, your life.

Choose kindness, understanding, tolerance and love.

Take the time you need to process all the grief of this life, these last 18 months, the world....and set the intention to balance the dark by stoking your inner, unwavering light.

Hold your pain with gentleness and love.

Don't be afraid to feel.

Tend yourself the way you always longed for and needed to be tended, whether you were or not.

Be what was perhaps missing for you.

Let yourself heal

Rumi says

"Don't turn your head

Keep looking at the bandaged place

Bring your light and love to the web of life. We all need you.

I wish you a bountiful summer's end and a peaceful transition to fall.

I'm grateful for you all

🌺August Musings and Offerings🌺

Warm Mid-Summer greetings to you all

The hummingbird in some shamanic traditions represents the power to take an impossible journey. As small as she is, she migrates distances that seem unimaginable, and always seeks the sweetness, the nectar of life.

I'm finding myself deeply need of her wisdom, guidance and protection in these challenging days.

This pandemic and the resulting political divides and polarization are changing us, not necessarily for the good, in my opinion.

I'm calling on each of us, though, to recognize that we are NOT powerless.

That, just like the hummingbird, we have the capacity to take an impossible journey that has the potential to change each of our lives and therefore initiate the change we wish to see in the world.

I have very strong opinions about what I think is "right" and "wrong" in the world...,but one of the most heartbreaking and disturbing things to me at this moment is the hate speech- the inability to disagree without being disagreeable (at best), hurtful, literally and figuratively, at worst.

Lately, it also feels like a deflection, an avoidance or even a deep privilege to "agree to disagree" or to be able to opt out of a challenging conversation.

This feels deeply unsatisfying and divisive to me.

How do I speak my truth with clarity, while being curious about others and their opinions?

How to be kind when under the perpetual sense of "threat"?

This seems to be a skill we are all in need of practicing.

What seems sorely lacking in conversations of late is civility and respect for another's basic humanity. Perhaps, as unfamiliar and uncomfortable as it may be, rather than reflexly censoring, dismissing, hating and name calling, our inquiry could be something like "Can you tell me how/why you believe this/feel this way?" or "Do you have evidence to back this up and if so, can you share it please so I can learn?"

It is unacceptable in my opinion to behave unkindly, even, or perhaps especially, when we disagree.

Learning how to communicate skillfully about deeply personal and divisive topics MUST occur for any good healing work to get done.

Otherwise we have simply agreed to an impasse and nothing will change.

I believe that each and every one of us needs to do some serious soul searching work-for the benefit of us all.

"Hatred never ceases by hatred, but by love alone is healed. This is an ancient and eternal law"...says Buddhist wisdom....

We could all take a breath, a moment to consider this.

I know that we are all exhausted, short tempered, afraid and afraid of being afraid. I will go on record to say that I believe that the solution, as radical and impossible as it may seem, is to work to ensure that everybody's needs get met.

To work together so that we connect as fragile humans, more aware of our commonality than of our differences. To try to create a better world that respects and cares about all of us.

It sounds impossible, yet Marshall Rosenberg, therapist and author of Non-Violent Communication, believes it is possible...and I want to believe it too.

His 4 step process is to;

1) Observe what is happening, without evaluation or judgment;

2) to notice how you FEEL (not think) about what happened, and

3) let that lead you to what you really need.

It is only with all this information, he says, that we can make a skillful request (4).

The clearer we are in our request, the more likely our needs will be met. If you are like me, a kind, thoughtful request is more do-able, or easy to consider, than one that is demanding and demeaning. I need lots of practice here too...

The big challenges that may arise are to identify what we are feeling, as most of us are much clearer about what we think (left brain, masculine paradigm) than what we feel ( right brain, feminine paradigm) and what we actually DO NOT need/want, rather than what we DO need/want.

Rosenberg suggests that whenever you or someone else complains, blames or judges, it is a sign that some need or needs are not being met.

It is a sign that something is missing.

The question then is are we brave/patient/kind enough to find out what?

It would behoove us all to start to consider what we DO need/want instead of only focusing on what we don't.

Then we have skillful actionable possibilities for change.

We can also learn to hold others accountable for their actions without shaming or blaming-this is a big one too!

I'm inviting all of us to practice speaking to ourself and others with respect, civility and curiosity.

It is tricky and by no means do I suggest it to be easy, but if we are not paying attention with honest awareness, we may find ourselves guilty of the same thing we are complaining about...i.e being rude back when someone is rude to you...

I have to continually remind myself that the words Listen and Silent are spelled with the same letters...

I know I always need to listen more and talk less; to be more curious than afraid....you too?

Let's agree to not fuel the fires of divisiveness, for the good of all of us.

Choose to be a beginner rather than an expert, always aware that "there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy" ( from Hamlet I think?)

And remember that there is a really important reason all this is called PRACTICE.😍

Another important reason to work on containing/taming/understanding the fear, anger and all other strong emotions and reactivity that these times evoke is simply that it is detrimental to your immune system. This matters more than ever in this pandemic.

It is impossible to heal when ensnared in survival mode and fearfulness.

Whenever there is a threat, real or imagined, physiologically, resources are redirected AWAY from anything that does not allow you to literally escape from the "tiger" chasing you. This includes digestion, hormonal/endocrine systems, immunity and the cardiovascular system.

Sadly the autonomic nervous system has not been upgraded from caveman times and we are still wired for survival, not happiness!

These times seem to be triggering primal fear, a very deep and real energetic toll, which can go unnoticed in the overwhelm. We have an innate negativity bias when under threat, and this is on full display these days.

While we can all understand the fear around the virus and divisiveness in the world, consider that this unchecked reactivity and survival mentality actually has a detrimental effect.

In fact, stress is known to be both inflammatory and depressing so it seems sensible to diminish anything that negatively affects our ability to stay well.

Reducing reactivity, and diminishing stress is key.

Remember that stress is a RESPONSE.

The pandemic is not the stress; it is your response to it that is the stress. Your response is the only thing you have control over, even if it feels like you don't.

In addition, getting deep, restorative rest is a HUGE benefit to immune, physical, emotional and mental health

I simply do not believe that a vaccine or other pharmaceutical intervention alone is enough.

We must also work to change our minds and deeply engrained old habits to stay healthy and well.

We are each unique in our stress reactions and sensitivities based on life experience and traumas large and small, so we each must do the work that we resonate with to find pockets of calm and balance, however small, as often as possible in this chaos.

They add up.

I know this seems hard, even counterintuitive, but it is an imperative for good mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health and well-being.

This is a very rich time, ripe with possibilities for healing old, deep wounds and habits IF we are willing to look deeply into our own fears, past traumas and heart needs.

Only by looking directly at what we fear can we become fearless.

It is just like the monsters under the bed; what you imagine is always worse that what you actually see when you rouse the courage to look.

See what it is like to honor your own rights and needs, while also honoring the rights and needs of those with whom you may disagree. That in itself moves us from divisiveness to inclusion.

It's simple, but not easy.

Practice NOT shaming or blaming (yourself as well as others!)

If you or someone else does, be curious about what need is not being met.

Be willing to notice if being more curious breaks you out of the automatic reactivity that keeps us imprisoned in the cage of fear.

Practice "on the spot compassion"for yourself and others.

Know that everybody wants to be happy and safe...just like you and me.

I am not minimizing the challenging and frightening times we are in. It just seems that there must be a better way to navigate than the way that we currently are. Let yourself see clearly the negative impacts of a fear base mentality.

My offerings here are just a few of many possibilities. I do not proclaim to be an expert. I am just sharing some life lessons that have helped me rein in the fear.

At the very least, I hope it calls you to think of even more!

Maybe you'll just try something new and see for yourself how or if it matters.

Don't believe me...and if you disagree with me, perhaps you can start your practice right there: be curious about what buttons have been pushed rather than blaming the button pusher!

After all, we can only control or change the buttons, not the button pushers😍 Lots of hard lessons here I know...

I offer all these musings gently and kindly, simply wishing that we can all realize that we are in the same family on a planet that is struggling.

If you see what is missing-bring it!!

I'm grateful for your company on this impossible journey💕🙏

🌻July Musings and offerings🌻

maria-oswalt-ns5Valsrpho-unsplash.jpg

Happy Summertime!

Welcome July in all its glory and abundance!

This year is already flying by!

I'm imagining that, although you may have learned a lot in these last 15+ months-about yourself, your relationships, and the world, things that would otherwise have remained unknown,

you may also be finding it surprisingly easy to return to auto pilot. 😩

Maybe before you get back to the old familiar busy-ness, you could spare a moment to pause, just for a breath or 2, to ponder how this newfound knowledge, this once-in-a -lifetime experience has changed you, me and ALL of us and the world as we knew it.

How will it affect your life choices going forward...

or will it change anything at all??

Are you setting forth now with clear, fresh eyes, new priorities and clarity about what and who really matters to you and how you wish to spend the rest of this precious life?

Or are you slipping with ease back into the old, familiar, unconscious patterns of auto pilot?

You have a choice.

I invite you to stay awake.

Thomas Merton said:

"The rush and pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of its innate violence.

To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything,

is to succumb to violence".

I remember when I was in my Mindfulness training many years ago with Jon Kabat-Zinn, he said something very similar to me that changed everything :

"Denying the experience you are having is a

form of violence to yourself"

(...and I would add that denying someone else's experience is a form of violence to them...)

How did I not know this?? All we get in this life are our experiences and they are meant to be savored and learned from, not denied....and yet...

It is tempting to underestimate the trauma of the last year, to deny the pain of it all, to put all the complex feelings of loss and fear and despair away, ignored and unprocessed. They WILL come back, though, sooner or later, in one way or another, if not acknowledged and healed.

To save yourself having to revisit this, isn't it best to face it head on-with whatever help, support and guidance you may need NOW?

To learn from it, gather strength and understanding to add to your resilience tool kit, ready for the inevitable next time life knocks us out of our respective comfort zones?

For the first time perhaps EVER, we have, as a collective, as a global human family, lived AT THE SAME TIME in at least some degree of fear, and huge uncertainty for over a year. It continues for many of us. Alhough it may be a a new experience for many, it is a sadly familiar one for way too many others.

Now that we know what it is like to feel so alone and afraid, how can we NOT take solace in remembering that we are all connected??

How can we NOT be kind and care and love our neighbors?

Chronic, unremitting stress and fear ( I've heard it called "Chronic Well-Armored Hopelessness") negatively impacts our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health and physiology-including the health of the immune system, digestion, hormone balance and cardiovascular health.

I'm inviting you to not ignore the toll, whether you currently acknowledge and recognize it or not, and to make self care and deep healing a priority. This has been a life changing time.

Healing and tending yourself is NOT just for you, but for all of us.

Energy medicine has been a great healing balm for me, a much needed addition to all my other practices. It takes the "static" out of the energy system and creates space and flow for inner rebalancing, repatterning old habits and offering deep and lasting healing.

It is also an amazing opportunity to learn to understand and speak the language of the body, perhaps for the first time. AND it is fun and can bring unexpected joy and new vitality as it shifts you out of your very busy mind into this moment in your own skin, which is your home for this lifetime!

Here is a 17 minute Daily energy routine to try.

It is based on my training in Eden Energy Medicine and Donna Eden's Daily Energy Routine. I do it nearly every day!

Enjoy💫

Daily Energy Routine short practice

heal yourself, but don't rush

help people, but have boundaries

love others, but don't let them harm you

love yourself, but don't become egotistical

stay informed, but don't overwhelm yourself

embrace change, but keep pursuing your goals

~Yung Pueblo

from Clarity and Connection

🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼

There are plenty of things you can do to enhance your health and well-being above and beyond medicines and vaccines: eating a healthy diet-one that YOU can digest, getting enough RESTORATIVE rest, doing less rather than more, reducing stress, spending time with loved ones and lots of time and immersion in the beauty and wisdom of nature...

Remember:

Stress is a RESPONSE to a change in the environment!

The stress of this last year has NOT been the pandemic-it has been your RESPONSE to it.

The good news is that your response is the only thing that you have control of, though most of us remain unaware of this, and live instead by reacting to, or trying to deny or escape change or blame someone or something else. It just doesn't work. As Jon Kabat-Zinn said: "wherever you go, there you are"...

To respond requires your nonjudgmental attention to what is already so by actively accepting what is, and agreeing to work with it as best you can, using present moment information.

Training the mind to stay in the present moment rather than catastrophizing or living in the past or future is a worthy practice to take on daily.

Most of us need lots of practice here.

I am happy to guide you in individual work if this resonates with you.

Although there are many ways to help yourself stay well and optimize your health, in my humble opinion,Yoga Nidra is still the BEST medicine😍

It resets the autonomic nervous system and reallocates resources for deep and lasting healing AND has the effect of 2-6 hours of DEEP restorative sleep!

Despite my reverence and love for yoga nidra, though, the classes have not been filling so I will take a break for the summer with the hope of resuming classes in the fall, provided there is interest

☀️June Musings and Offerings☀️

Warm late spring greetings to you all!

A recent New York Times article calls a common pandemic feeling of stagnation, that blah I-Can't-Do-Anything feeling Languishing.

A follow up article suggests that the opposite of languishing is Flourishing.

How in the world do we get from here, languishing, to there, flourishing?

Maybe the best "person" to ask is Mother Earth herself.

Remember early in the lockdown hearing how astonishing it was to see how quickly Mother Earth could heal when we stopped doing what we were doing?

The waters healed, the skies cleared, the animals flourished.

All in a miraculously short time when we were forced to slooow waaay down

So as eager as you may be to get "back to normal", whatever that is for you, remember the gift we gave the earth by NOT moving so quickly, by NOT being unconscious and on auto-pilot.

See what happens if you commit to being more present and aware of the beauty and joy available in every single moment. Try not missing the gifts of the earth that keep giving, her amazing capacity for healing and growth.

To me, nothing compares to growing something, or having a garden, no matter how small.

Even planting one seed and watching the miracle of life happen.

Witness the magic; see how a tiny seed remembers who it is meant to be and rises up in the most miraculous way to create something that is seemingly impossible, something unimaginable compared to the tiny seed from which it came.

That gives SO much more than seemed possible!

This is MAGIC.

This is FLOURISHING.

I can't think of a more appropriate word for it. It is precious and amazing and the essence of life on this beautiful earth.

Now is a good time to remember that this capacity for amazing and unimagined, even seemingly impossible, growth is our birthright as well.

We all have seeds of untapped potential, germinating, ready to sprout when the conditions allow.

I invite you this summer to deliberately create the conditions that WILL allow your magic to grow and blossom and bear fruit.

Let yourself come fully to life and shine your light for all of us to see. And let yourself rejoice when you see how miraculous you truly are when you agree to FLOURISH

☀️🌻🌱💕

So wild flowers will come up where you are.
You have been stony for too many years.
Try something different.
Surrender.”

Perhaps as we near the solar eclipse happening on June 11 and the summer solstice on June 21, we can move from dull to brilliant, from languishing to flourishing, by witnessing the majesty, abundance and joy that summertime brings. We can be like the sun in the eclipse-though hidden for a moment in shadow, remembering and then recovering our capacity to shine brightly.

☀️☀️☀️

There are so many ways to help yourself stay well and optimize your health, yet in my mind, Yoga Nidra is still the BEST medicine

Yoga nidra guides us to much needed integration, balance, clarity and vitality so that we can each share our unique magic with the world

It is time to slow down and heal deeply

"As our world appears more and more out of balance, our destruction of the natural world increasing, there is a vital need to remember what is essential, simple, and sacred.

There was a time when the language of the Earth was the language of our daily lives, of planting and harvesting, sunshine and storms.

The words of the sacred were stars and seeds, mountains and rivers.

The soul and the seasons of nature moved together; they spoke the same mystery, the beauty that is within and around us.

It was all as natural as breathing, not needing to be remembered because never forgotten.

How could you forget the wind on your face or the songs of birds?

How could you forget the rise and fall of the tide?

These were not stories written in books but lived from morning until dusk, until dreamtime wove another texture into the firelight.

But now we live in a time of forgetting, when the deep resonance between our souls and the soul of the world has been covered over.

So there is a pressing need to remember, to recognize this hidden lifeblood of all that exists, its rhythms and movement, and how it makes itself known to us in different ways."

~Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee

💐May Musings and Offerings💐

bleeding-heart-3440706_1920.jpg

Happy May❣️

I hope you are all well and embracing the power and exuberance of springtime.

We are in times of great chaos and transformation...still..and the felt sense can be unsettling, even in its odd familiarity.

I heard the most amazing and relevant advice the other day from Buddhist teacher Tenzin Rinpoche:

Turn off the search engine of your mind, the endless DOING and learn to trust in BEING!

In the same way that your battery life is shortened on a phone always searching for service, so are your mind, physical/energy body and spirit drained by the constant weighing and measuring of EVERYTHING!!

Constant DOING and worrying is depleting to the essential functions necessary for healing-especially the immune system.

We live as if every moment has to be Googled and figured out; and that only serves to steal the preciousness of the moments of our fragile lives. It can also be an avoidance technique, keeping us insulated from the messiness and inevitable pain and confusion of life itself.

I invite you to take some time this spring to drop out of searching and into being, fully in this moment, in this body, in this room...which is just like THIS.

Choose to be fully present in this moment, which is in fact the ONLY moment you can ever be sure of... the only moment you have to live.

Sometimes, you will discover your pain, your heartbreak, your trauma, your grief. But this time, experiment with not running away. Agree to see what is already so, and what needs to be healed. Let the emotions run through you and absolutely reach out for support if you need it. Unfreezing the stuck emotions is the beginning of healing.

Stuck energy causes DIS-EASE and sometimes actual physical/emotional/spiritual DISEASE; restoring flow allows deep healing.

I believe that this

pandemic has revealed a lot-like how stuck and unwell and unconscious we have been. While the challenges remain, we can choose to turn this crisis into an opportunity for healing and choose to write our own life story, rather than being unconsciously carried along by the unhealthy energy of the collective and the energetic impressions of our past, both personal and ancestral.

Bring your anxiety into your heart, draw your fear into your warmth, bring your sorrow into the beauty of your soul.

Grow a tongue tender and brave, leaving the cold, hard, poison voice of shame and criticism behind and whisper.

Whisper into the centre of those feelings as you draw them near

“ What are you needing me to hear? “

For within their shaky voice and your own love and respect, is a learning.

Some medicine that leads you closer to you, closer to freedom.

~Brigit Anna McNeill

We have become a society of experts, of Do-ers.

I invite you to explore the rich fertile ground of BEING. It is way past time. We are individually and collectively out of balance.

Let's shift the pendulum back to healing and heart-full-ness❣️

You might have done

the external work

but your mind is starving

for internal attention

🌷April Musings and Offerings🌷

darren-richardson-apHEWVyykz4-unsplash.jpg

Warm Springtime Greetings to you all!

I'm hoping you are reveling in the signs of springtime bursting forth all around you!

"April Showers bring May Flowers "

the saying goes.

It may be worth it to take some time this spring to notice what you are watering.

What wants to burst forth in bloom in you?

What has been longing to grow or be noticed?

Are you watering seeds or weeds?

Do you have the patience to wait, see, trust and tend what is rising up to be expressed in you? Without judgment?

Do you even know what your unique medicine is?

Are you willing to honor and water it so it can grow and blossom?

You always get to choose what gets your attention.

Energy follows attention and intention.

What will you choose to give your attention to?

Where do you want to direct your energy?

Paying attention changes your experience;

when you think you already know, you stop paying attention.

Are you ready to see with fresh eyes?

To be surprised by the wonder all around?

These times are calling for conscious intention setting, thoughtful attention.

Lack of attention, living on auto-pilot,

leads to

Dis-connection, Dis-order

and Dis-ease

It's hard not to get caught up in the wave of excitement as the world starts rushing back to "normal" with mass vaccinations,

lifting of restrictions and the consequent return to

busy-ness...

unconsciousness.

This introspective time has made me realize that I truly do NOT want to return to "normal", which in my estimation was very abnormal; life-taking rather than life-giving.

The unquestioned speed of daily life.

The rampant materialism and greed.

The unacknowledged unconsciousness that took a great toll on all of us.

Perhaps you'll join me and spend some time this spring to reflect on exactly what you want to carry forth from the "old" unconscious life you have been living, while embedded in a society that thrives on auto-pilot.

Give your attention to the newfound awareness that you already have the capacity to create a more beautiful world, for yourself, others and all of life.

You have the power to choose.

Just by paying attention.

Together, let's set the intention to create the Connection, Order and Ease that we all long for and rise up for the good of all of us

...The door is wide and open-

don't go back to sleep...

Rumi

I'm feeling a deep call to live in a more conscious, simple, connected and aware way.

I am ready to take action to ensure that we all have the same privileges and opportunities to live in our own magnificent and unique glory, to insist that basic rights, necessities and comforts be available to everyone, everywhere with absolutely no exceptions.

You too?

This poem speaks to my heart and inspires me.

It clarifies what really matters, and gives me courage.

This is what I wish for all of us💕🙏

“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance.

To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you.

To seek joy in the saddest places.

To pursue beauty to its lair.

To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple.

To respect strength, never power.

Above all, to watch.

To try and understand.

To never look away.

And never, never, to forget… another world is not only possible, she is on her way.

On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing."

~Arundhati Roy

We are consciously creating a new world by giving thoughtful attention and care to our own healing.

Deep quiet, rest and balance creates the container that is essential for this healing.

We are like individual cells in a giant organism, a grand energy matrix.

When one of us heals, it brings healing to the whole.

Give your immune, energy and nervous systems the resources needed to heal body, mind and spirit.

Do it for yourself...do it for all of us.

Spring is the perfect time to catch up,

to remember who we really are:

We do not become healers.

We came as healers.

We are.

Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

We do not become storytellers.

We came as carriers of the stories we and our ancestors actually lived.

We are.

Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

We do not become artists.

We came as artists.

We are.

Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

We do not become writers, dancers, musicians, helpers, peacemakers.

We came as such.

We are.

Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

We do not learn to love in this sense.

We came as Love.

We are Love.

Some of us are still catching up to who we truly are.

~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes ~

Remember who and what you already are-it is time to co-create a more inclusive, loving and joyful world that holds all of us with love and respect.

May you release your burdens as gently as the cherry blossoms drop old petals

May deep awareness of our interconnectedness come into full bloom

May we remember how precious we each are and savor each other and our uniqueness

May we realize that so much more is possible if we work together rather than in opposition

May we be still and rest so we have the energy to help ourselves and each other heal and thrive

May we drop in and cultivate our unique gifts and talents so that we can bring our own unique medicine to this needy world

Let's set the intention to create a new, more beautiful and inclusive "normal" for humans, animals and the Earth which is our precious home

I wish you all a glorious, riotous, exuberant springtime.

🌷 March Musings and Offerings

snowdrop-5032254_1920.jpg

March 2021...

a whole year has passed

since everything changed...

Who knows how this Spring will be?

Will March roar in/out like a lion?

Or creep silently in/out like a lamb?

There is no way to know.

We must wait to see.

March is a tempestuous, exuberant month that can teach us patience

and give us hope.

It is a sacred time of rebirth and enthusiasm.

As March begins, I always find myself longing for warmer, sunnier days and looking for surprise splashes of green, tender new sprouts, and springtime flowers that seem to somehow magically appear out of cold frozen ground.

What perseverance they demonstrate!

What hope they bring!

I want some of that!

Maybe you too feel the tension of a bud or a sprout; the desire to expand and grow, to push against seemingly impossible barriers, to create, to reach toward the light, to embrace hope and new possibilities, all with the the urgency of impending birth.

I hope you are starting to see a light at the end of this long dark tunnel.

It is time.

Springtime brings strong, powerful, and wise energy to teach us to bravely and beautifully hold the paradox between sleep and wakefulness, yin and yang, effort and surrender.

I find it also teaches us to honor this sacred transition gently, to go slowly, to wait until the time is right to bloom.

In this sacred time of rebirth, let the energy of Spring help you to consciously declare your unique place in this glorious life dance.

“This is the time to be slow,

Lie low to the wall

Until the bitter weather passes.

Try, as best you can, not to let

The wire brush of doubt

Scrape from your heart

All sense of yourself

And your hesitant light.

If you remain generous,

Time will come good;

And you will find your feet

Again on fresh pastures of promise,

Where the air will be kind

And blushed with beginning.”

John O’Donohue

🌷

mackasey.jpg

We are hopefully entering into a new phase with this pandemic and perhaps we will soon enjoy long missed gatherings and hugs.

I'm hopeful though that we can heed the lessons of this transitional time and move toward what we desire without being willful or blind or acting impetuously because we are tired.

Let's take our sacred time to embrace vision and hope and new possibilities with courage and gentleness as we begin the healing process.

This has been quite a year.

As we are called by Springtime exuberance and pandemic fatigue to rush forth excitedly, to push through, let's also try to resist returning to the unconscious, automatic pilot way of living that used to be "normal" and create something new, sustainable, sacred, inclusive and beautiful.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Springtime is related to the Wood element.

Excess wood/spring energy can show up as anger, irritability and aggression; insufficient wood energy shows up as self judgment, timidity and inability to speak up for yourself.

When in balance, however, Wood exhibits exuberant vitality, certainty, clarity and determination, but also softness, tenderness, warmth and vulnerability.

This Spring, how about setting the intention to strive for balance in all things, especially in your practices, whatever they may be?

I invite you to spend some time this Spring to consider the intention with which you practice, whether your life practices are spiritual, mental, emotional, energetic or physical.

I have learned (seemingly always the hard way) that it is way too easy for me to engage in practices of all kinds with sights set on a particular outcome, often with the wish to "fix" or change something, to be "better than this".

When I engage in my practices in such an out-of-balance way, I find that I am inadvertently manipulating my experience (at best) or re-traumatizing myself (at worst) by forcing change in the wrong direction or before it is time. In this way I am utilizing and reinforcing the very same unhealthy and unhelpful energy and nervous system patterns and habits that are ingrained, engaging old ways in which my mind/body/spirit/energy have been defiled, disrespected, or unconsciously trained to behave in the past.

This imbalanced way of practicing inevitably arises with the thought that I/things should be different,

or are somehow not OK.

When my intention is anything other than to befriend myself exactly as I am, my body/mind/ spirit/energy body drift quickly toward protective mode, sometimes straight to survival. When that happens, the very things that I am doing with the intention of healing or finding ease, instead become a trigger, or a source of stress or dis-ease. There is no healing or ease in survival mode.

For this reason, I believe that it is well worth your while to periodically examine your relationship to your practices. Although they may ideally be "good" for you, check in to to see if in fact they are NOT good for you-not because they are the wrong practices, but because you are practicing them with the same old familiar, unhelpful patterns that wounded you in the first place-patterns that keep you locked in fear, mistrust, judgment, betrayal...you know the ones😉

Since energy follows intention, the more gentle and accepting you are of who and how you are in the moment, the greater the likelihood that your practices will be useful and healing.

The more you can befriend all your parts, the more safe your body/mind/spirit/energy body will feel with you.

Safety leads to trust...which is essential in my experience for meaningful change and deep healing.

When you are able to trust, all physiologic and energy systems shifts toward healing.

I am making it a habit this Spring to remind myself to practice and live in a way that honors, tends and and loves ME and my shadows exactly as I am/we are right now, in the way I wish I had been received and tended and loved in critical times of my life.

It matters.

When you can do this, everyone around you also gets the benefit of your personal work.

I hope you will join me in this intention in this sacred time.

So in this season of transition and rebirth, let yourself listen to the music of springtime outside in birdsong and wind.

Listen inside too.

Practice singing your very own song, finding your true voice, speaking your truth with clarity and kindness. Listen to hear what you need, what brings you to life.

Ride the unpredictable roller coaster of March from cold to warm and back as spring begins to gather strength to assert herself in her fullest most magnificent glory.

You are made of the same 5 elements as the rest of nature so you can emulate her by using this auspicious time preparing to burst forth into your true magnificence!

Just move gently, slowly, in your own time.

We are all on a sacred journey to wholeness🙏💕

aaron-burden-hB_xgEXucQs-unsplash.jpg

So stay. Sit. Linger. Tarry. Wait. Behold. Wonder.

There will be time enough for running. For rushing.

For worrying.

For pushing.

For now, stay. Wait

~ Jan Richardson

One of the best ways I know to train yourself to wait, to gather the resources you need to burst forth in your fullest most magnificent glory, is to practice Yoga Nidra.

Most of us are masters of Doing, while not so great at Being.

Your nervous system, energy body and immune system function optimally from a place of balance and ease.

It is essential to take time to unplug from the busy-ness of life and restore.

It seems true that most of us undervalue and underestimate the power of deep restorative rest, quiet, the necessary time to rebalance, to NOT do something.

Current studies say that 86% of Americans are sleep deprived

(though that was even BEFORE this pandemic, so...)

Set the intention to tend and nurture yourself in the way that you have needed by taking time out to rest and restore.

Please join me in a class soon!!

It's the best nervous system/energy/immune system balancer that I know, and has the effect of 2-6 hours of RESTFUL sleep!

It is truly an awesome way to re-allocate resources for optimal healing.

💕February Musings and Offerings💕

February 2021...

In this wintry month where heart images abound...I'm hopeful that you are using this time to find your way back to your own heart

Despite what can feel like endless cold, we know that Spring is already stirring beneath the frozenness here at the midpoint of the winter season.

Winter is a time of rest, stillness and restoration, a time to gather strength and resources, preparing for the bountiful, expressive glory of springtime.

I know this whole last year may have felt like a very long winter...but I invite you to shift your awareness, to tune into the stirrings of fresh new life and possibilities in your own life and heart.

It has become too easy in this pandemic for many of us to become frozen and numb.

In this month of hearts, how about focusing on opening your heart?

Open to yourself, honoring and tending all the challenges of this last year, of the years before, of this lifetime... and then letting that healing, tenderness and acceptance spill out, so you can open your heart to others with greater understanding and true compassion.

Because you know how hard it is, has been, will still be.

This is necessary work to change the trajectory of our lives, to heal ourselves and therefore this country at this critical time.

The hatred and divisiveness is at new heights, or at least more visible. It is horrifying to see that people feel the need to demean and debase others for their own benefit. I believe that fear, lack of self worth and trauma both personal and generational drives divisiveness and hate. I recently read that a common mark of fascism is the lack of empathy...so let's devote ourselves to refusing this.

Starting right now, let's make it our lifelong project to reject the hate, incivility and lack of care for self and others by healing our own wounds and then letting that healing be a gift, a guidepost to help others find their way. Let's make sure that everybody has what they need to thrive and live with ease. There IS enough-it is just not shared equally.
We do not know what others lives have been.

It is time to care and tend ourselves and each other.

We are all connected

In this season of hallmark-y hearts, let's focus on authentically opening to the challenges many of us face with new clarity and care.

It is way past time to be kind.

To yourself. To everyone.

One of my mentors, Eduardo Duran, PhD says:

"One of the teachings that I have heard is that since words are made of air that when we cause the air to vibrate with our words, these vibrations affect the air all over their world"

We can change the vibration, the reality around us by choosing our words with care.

This does NOT mean that we don't hold others accountable for their actions. To the contrary, it means that we DO, but without the more familiar and habitual blaming and shaming that we have unfortunately learned and accepted. Changing the vibration by the way we speak to each other.

There is no need to stoop to the same behaviors that we criticize.

This is a time to be mindful of the power of words and actions.

It is time to heal our own hearts precisely because of the unacceptable levels of violence and hatred in this country, in our families, our neighborhoods and our world. Let's change the vibration to kindness and inclusiveness and healing.

(💕As always, I want to be cognizant of the privilege that I/many of us enjoy-and offer these thoughts so that those of us who can, will begin to heal so that we can speak for those who are truly trying to survive, those who are oppressed and fearful and lonely and without resources that are essential for life and do not have the luxury of rest or healing at this moment.

May we be ambassadors and supporters to change this unacceptable reality💕

I know this is a slippery topic and want to acknowledge that I am doing my best from where I sit to help but in no way mean to be tone deaf to the suffering all around💕

I am fully aware that at times, it may well be inadequate 💕)

Parker Palmer, a favorite Quaker author and teacher says:

"... Left untended, our hearts break into a million shards...

and those shards are thrown like fragment grenades at the ostensible source of their pain.

Violence is what happens when we don't know what to do with our own suffering..."

It is only when we can hold our own suffering with tenderness, understanding and compassion that we can do the same for others. Truly, each of our healing benefits all of us.

For that reason, I believe it is our individual responsibility to do our healing work.

Yes, it is for each of us individually, but ultimately, it is for all of us.

Many of us have proven to be awesome caretakers of others...but not so good at tending ourselves.

I know this first hand.

As a young surgery intern on my Open Heart Surgery rotation, one of the least favorite jobs of the intern was to don a white cotton glove and hold the heart of the patient while the cardiac surgeon performed the revascularization. Well, you may not know this, but hearts are heavy and slippery and interns are sleepy and surgeons are grouchy, and this is a BIG deal so it was NOT a favorite job for the lowest man/woman on the totem pole.

But while it was not easy, it was an essential part of the surgery.

I always felt like it was an honor, as daunting and scary as it often was to barely move or breathe, to literally hold someone else's heart with the utmost of care. In that moment, nothing else mattered.

But it wasn't until many years later that I reflected on this, and wondered why I had never considered holding my OWN heart with the same precision, care and tenderness that I held so many others, both literally and figuratively.

It was a breakthrough, transformative, life-altering moment of loving kindness for myself for the first time ...and the work continues to this day.

And if I asked you

to name all the things that you love

how long would it take

for you to name yourself?

christmas-picture-id884003392.jpg

The truth as I know it is that we cannot really serve others from an empty cup-our own self care and practices to strengthen and uplift ourselves are NOT time away from others and our responsibilities, but in SERVICE to them all.

Many years ago when I was in a master's program at MUIH (Maryland University of Integrative Health-then Tai Sophia Institute) a classmate of mine was ALWAYS late for afternoon sessions, which irritated us all.

I remember the instructor saying that he was late because he was napping...and that his nap was actually for us all so he would be nicer and less grouchy...

So just like that, I learned that our work for ourself is a gift to us all!

Another thing I know personally, is that when you are living in survival mode, you cannot connect with, or be empathic with others (seems important to know as we "evaluate" the behaviors of ourself and others when we/they seem to "not care").

It is simply neurologically and energetically impossible.

So how in the world can we break out of survival and start to connect and thrive? Especially when there seems to be chaos all around us?

One of my very favorite ways to begin to balance, turn off survival mode, open the heart, deeply rest, restore and renew is

YOGA NIDRA.

This 90 minute practice begins with a short energy medicine session

(another awesome way to break out of survival mode) followed by meditation (yet another way!) to ensure a deeper experience.

The formal practice is 60 minutes long and you don't have do ANYTHING but listen to my voice and rest.

At the most superficial but essential level, it has the equivalent of 2-6 hours of RESTFUL sleep!

With continued practice, the work deepens to allow the release of old and engrained neurologic and energetic habits and subconscious programming that no longer serves.

Deep healing can occur while you rest.

Yoga nidra has been used at Walter Reed Medical Center in returning Iraqi war veterans with PTSD with excellent healing results.

Anne Lamott says

" everything works better when you unplug it for awhile"

That goes for us too.

Please join me in a class soon!!

It's the best nervous system balancer and rest I know-

and an awesome way to do good heart work for yourself and the world.

30 Days to Health Summit

May We (A Prayer)

May we come together after so many bitter words and such division.

May our minds open to the experience and points of view of those who are not just like ourselves.

May we heal from sexism, racism, bigotry, and misunderstandings of all kinds.

May we have imagination enough to transform hate.

May we practice compassion, empathy, patience.

May we work together to steward the planet, the water, our benevolent institutions, our children, our future.

May we strengthen and expand a political process that excludes too many of us.

May the arc of the universe bend toward justice.

May kindness prevail. And decency.

May neighborliness take root—let’s get to know one another. Let’s find ways of living together without walls.

May we come to understand that we are multitudes, and that is a good thing.

May we nourish the seeds of peace in our interactions with one another, because how we speak to, and treat one another matters.

May we find our place, and do the real work that needs doing, and trust that we each have a role to play in creating a healthy, inclusive, resilient, beautiful society.

May hearts open, open, open, open, open, open, open, open, open wider than before.

2021...

It is time now to welcome the return of the light,

to start a brand new year...

I know many are excited to see 2020 go...but I invite you to ponder the many unnoticed gifts and important lessons of this unprecedented past year through a wider lens so that we can create something new that honors this present moment.

The losses of 2020 are ongoing. The pandemic has followed us into the new year. You may have been shocked to learn that we are not as healthy as we may have thought, that the systems that we take for granted may not be as supportive and caring as we may have imagined, that automatic pilot is really no longer an option.

We have been harshly reminded us of the fragility of life.

And this awareness gives us far more power than we know to optimize our capacity to heal as we move forward. It is time to change the way we have been living.

This past year has also brought forth amazing acts of courage and care, connection and community in ways that are heartening and encouraging.

We are beginning to be stronger in voice and action to insist upon a gentler, more caring way of living, of tending, of being a mortal human.

Though these huge transformations in living and being take time, we have finally begun in the midst of chaos to build something new.

I believe foundational healing is afoot.

Such great paradigm shifts are not easy.

While we all have the capacity for great resilience and deep healing, times like these wreak havoc on the immune and nervous systems, especially when we are overwhelmed. You may have found that your usual practices are not quite enough in this new life.

There is a greater than ever necessity to settle, ground and balance to allow for optimal vitality to manage these chaotic times. As hard as it is to do and believe, now is the time to rest.

Do not be misled

into thinking

you should be doing more.

Rest

Feed

Heal

Hold

Feel

These are the seeds,

the beginnings

be gentle with it all

Holy Days

~Vicki Rivand

So in these "holy days", I want to invite you to welcome the possibility of cracking the door open to let a ray of light in. This is NOT about being all "love and light", nor is it spiritual bypassing; it is about choosing to embrace the whole truth of what is already so-which I assert is NOT only darkness... if you are willing to look... This is the "rubber hitting the road" practice of mindfulness.

Of course, seeing the beauty and miracles of nature around you does NOT pay your rent or buy groceries or bring back lost loved ones-but it DOES relax your nervous system, allowing a reallocation of precious resources toward healing and restoration, revitalizing the immune system and balancing the overwrought nervous system. It can open you to new possibilities that you cannot see when in survival mode and thus contribute to greater resilience, vibrancy and health.

This is the medicine we all need and already have access to when we tune in.

Perhaps this year, instead of making the usual new year's resolution to be different, to lose or gain something, you might consider committing to becoming fully YOU, in your fullest, most magnificent, authentic glory.

Devote yourself to seeking and finding your unique strengths and skills and bring your dreams to life in this auspicious time. Be willing to see if your head and heart are headed in the same, or disparate directions and make choices that bring you into greater alignment with your heart.

One of the most important teachings I have ever received is that we are each here in this lifetime to bring a special and unique gift that only we can bring.

You are one of a kind and your only job is to express that in its fullness. Sadly, as we try to "fit in" to someone else's expectations, we cut off parts of our authentic self. This I believe is one of the many causes of our individual and collective Dis-Ease.

To do this healing work, we must INSIST that everyone have their basic needs met; that everyone have their unique gift/skill set nurtured so that they can thrive.

We need to realize our responsibilities and take our places in the sacred web of life, knowing in our bones that the health and healing of one is health and healing for all.

It is time to commit to interconnection and thriving for all human and non-human beings, and for

the earth which is our home, refusing to turn a blind eye toward, or tolerate greed, abuse, hatred, separation or marginalization for one more second.

This is the time for Fierce Compassion and will require a new softness, gentle tenderness and curiosity, rather than the more familiar harsh judgment and fear, as we navigate our shared reality to a bigger more inclusive place.

Here's MORE good news confirming our interconnectedness💕🙏💫

"Every individual’s energy affects the collective field environment. The means each person’s emotions and intentions generate an energy that affects the field. A first step in diffusing societal stress in the global field is for each of us to take personal responsibility for our own energies. We can do this by increasing our personal coherence and raising our vibratory rate, which helps us become more conscious of the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes that we are feeding the field each day. We have a choice in every moment to take to heart the significance of intentionally managing our energies. This is the free will or local freedom that can create global cohesion. "

In this New Year,

as I offer good wishes, classes and healing practices that have been transformative for me in my healing journey, I am aware of the power of words and am trying my best to not be tone deaf to the suffering in this world, in your life. I do not willfully intend to be disrespectful of anyone, minimize or disrespect your unique and precious story.... yet I know that sometimes I accidentally will, because I am human and cannot possibly know the experience of any others in full. None of us can, as we are all unique with our own lenses through which we see the world.

May we cultivate the capacity to enlighten and educate each other, to come together in gentleness with the true desire to realize our common humanity and to be honest about the many disparities and inequalities that cause so much suffering and to be curious about all that we do not know about each other and our life experiences.

It feels essential now for all of us to work to learn our triggers, and with this awareness, to shift from automatic pilot reactivity to a conscious, present moment based response.

Let's engage with this life in this moment just as it is, not getting lost in past experiences or future projections....because this moment is already just like this and it is precious precisely because it is the only moment in which we can act to affect what comes next.

"Please take responsibility for the energy

you bring into the room"

~ Dr. Jill Bolte-Taylor

With practice, I believe we can come to a gentler way of communicating with ourselves and others, honoring our different life experiences so we can all learn and grow.

I wish for all of us to become curious rather than defensive, not to ignore our traumas, but to learn to know them so they can be tended and healed.

This year, let's lean deeply into letting difficult people and situations teach us. To not hide from the hard truths that can lead to a more honest and whole version of each of us and our relationships with the world and ourselves.

The only thing any of us can control is how to relate to what is...and that is the practice.

I invite you to join me in taking responsibility to the energy you are adding to the field.

Let us aspire to be honest about the many ways, large and small, that we are privileged and use that power for those who are not, for whatever reason, able to have that luxury in this moment.

To be willing to learn and grow and heal and connect and repair misunderstandings.

May we be willing to move from a place of heart rather than ego, especially in conflict, to be willing to simply stop contributing to unnecessary suffering because we ALWAYS get to choose how and where to place our attention...It's all PRACTICE.

May we be courageous enough to care about each other and stand up and fight for equality and human dignity and love, even if the issues in question are not our own, all in the spirit of respect and kindness for our fellow travelers in this precious and rare human life. May we all not just survive, but begin to thrive in this new year, as a fragile and impermanent human community on this precious earth.

May we enter the age of Aquarius with the intention of inviting the harmony and understanding that this time is ripe for, embracing essential feminine qualities long disparaged and oppressed like nurturing, tending, understanding and supporting each unique and precious member of this earth family rather than continuing in the old, worn out, divisive, toxic masculinity that dominates, demeans, overpowers and has prevailed for far too long.

We all have both masculine and feminine qualities.

Let this be a year where we recognize this longstanding imbalance and strive to find a new integration and harmony between the two polarities.

Let's practice deep listening and the patience to wait until the way forward clears rather than pushing toward an ego driven goal. This opens us to even greater possibilities, as we are stronger together in inner and outer balance and wholeness than we are in separation and competition

For last years words belong to last year's language and next year's words await another voice

And to make an end is to make a beginning

~TS Eliot

This has the potential to be a very potent year. We have been challenged to the point of survival, and will still be for the foreseeable future. Yet there is light...

May we all commit to helping ourselves, our brothers and sisters in any way we can, large or small. Just find your lane/skill/talent/strength and commit to working for the health of the Whole. AND remember, that your self care and healing work is essential for the healing of all of us💝

In closing, I'd like to leave you with a poem of hope and possibility for all that CAN potentially be if we are willing and able to relax, be present and see-even in the midst of the chaos.

BLESSINGS

occur.
Some days I find myself

putting my foot in

the same stream twice;

leading a horse to water

and making him drink.

I have a clue.

I can see the forest

for the trees.

All around me people

are making silk purses

out of sow's ears,

getting blood from turnips,

building Rome in a day.

There's a business

like show business

There's something new

under the sun.

Some days misery

no longer loves company;

and puts itself out of its.

There's rest for the weary.

There's turning back

There are guarantees.

I can be serious.

I can mean that.

You can quite

put your finger on it.

Some days I know

I am long for this world.
I can go Home again.

~Ron Wallace
